The Swiss higher education system distinguishes between universities and universities of applied sciences. Notwithstanding their different educational remits, both types of university have equal status. All higher education institutions offering degree courses in music, theatre, design, fine arts, creative writing, and conservation studies are attached to universities of applied sciences. Swiss universities of applied sciences award degrees and academic titles under applicable legislation. The general admission requirements to higher education in Switzerland are 12 to 13 years of compulsory education and a recognised upper secondary school qualification (academic or vocational baccalaureate). Following the introduction of the two-tier Bologna higher education system in Europe, all Swiss universities offer Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.
